Medium Action Spinning Rod

Power And Action Are Not The Same

Power describes how much force is needed to bend a rod and is stated as ultralight through to heavy, which relates to the weight of lure and the size of fish it suits.

Action describes where along the blank the rod bends, from fast rods flexing near the tip to slow rods bending through most of their length.

People conflate the two constantly, and a medium power fast action rod and a medium power slow action rod behave completely differently despite sharing a label.

What Fast Action Actually Gives You

A fast action rod transmits vibration from the lure to the hand clearly and sets a hook with a short sharp movement, which suits jigs and anything needing feel.

It also has less cushion, which means a fish shaking its head close to the boat can tear a hook free where a softer rod would absorb it.

Slower actions load up and cast lighter lures further, and they bend into a fish and protect a light line, which is why they persist for float and bait fishing.

Matching Lure Weight Honestly

Every rod states a lure weight range, and casting well below it produces a rod that will not load and casting well above it risks breaking the blank.

That range is where the rod performs, and a rod used consistently at one end of it is the wrong rod for that fishing.

Line rating matters equally, and using line far stronger than a rod is rated for means the rod breaks before the line does in a snag.

Length And Where You Fish

Longer rods cast further and are awkward in tight cover, under trees and in a small boat, which is the basic trade.

Around two metres suits general lure fishing from a bank with room, and shorter rods suit boats, kayaks and overgrown swims.

Two-piece and telescopic rods travel far more easily and lose a small amount of action through the joint, which for most fishing is not noticeable.

Guides, Reel Seats And What Fails

Guide inserts crack and the crack then cuts line under load, which is a failure that costs fish and is invisible until it happens.

Running a cotton bud around each guide catches cracks instantly, and it is worth doing at the start of a season.

Reel seats corrode in salt water and seize, and rinsing after saltwater use is the maintenance that determines whether a rod lasts years or one season.

Storage causes more rod damage than fishing does, since rods left leaning in a corner take a set over months and rods stored in a hot car boot suffer resin degradation in the blank. A tube or a rack keeps a rod straight and protected, and it costs very little against a rod that has developed a permanent bend. Car doors and boot lids account for a remarkable proportion of broken tips, which is worth a moment of attention every time tackle goes away.

The Verdict

A versatile rod for most freshwater lure fishing, where matching power, action and lure weight honestly matters more than price.

Fast actions lose fish close in, rods used outside their lure range perform badly, and cracked guides cut line silently.

Check the lure weight range against what you actually cast. A rod outside its range does not work properly.

En un coup d'œil

Avantages

  • Covers a wide range of lures and techniques
  • Fast actions transmit feel clearly
  • Graphite blanks are light for long sessions
  • Two-piece versions travel easily

Inconvénients

  • Power and action labels are widely confused
  • Fast actions lose fish at the net
  • Cracked guide inserts cut line invisibly
  • Reel seats seize after saltwater use

Questions fréquemment posées

What is the difference between power and action?

Power is how much force bends the rod, stated ultralight to heavy. Action is where along the blank it bends. Two rods with the same power and different actions behave completely differently, and the two are constantly confused.

Does the lure weight rating matter?

Yes. Casting well below it means the rod never loads and casts poorly; casting well above it risks breaking the blank. A rod used consistently at one extreme of its range is the wrong rod for that fishing.

Why do I keep losing line?

Check the guides. Cracked ceramic inserts cut line under load and the damage is invisible until it costs you a fish. Running a cotton bud around each guide catches every crack in seconds.
